“The defendants were involved in a terrifying plot to kidnap, and ultimately to kill, their intended victim,” Kim said in a statement. “Fortunately, the person they hired to carry out their crime alerted the FBI, and now the defendants have been held accountable for their crimes.”

The scheme began in July 2016, when Goldberg and Liebowitz planned the kidnapping of a man who refused to grant a religious divorce to his wife and torture him into doing so, Kim said.

Rockland man Gottlieb got them in touch with a private investigator, who they wanted to carry out the kidnapping and torture, Kim said. But the investigator, who wasn’t named, alerted the FBI to their plot.

The investigator helped the FBI gather specifcis about their scheme in August and Spetember 2016 until Liebowitz and Goldberg were arrested on Sept. 6.

Five days later, Gottlieb was arrested.

In addition to their prison sentences, Goldberg, 56, and Liebowitz, 26, were each sentenced to three years of supervised release.
