Goldberg pleaded guilty on Sept. 28 to conspiring to commit kidnapping and murder for hire. Liebowitz pleaded guilty on July 27 to conspriing to commit extortation. And Gottlieb pleaded guilty on Sept. 15 to helping to conceal the plot from law enforcement.

Goldberg was sentenced to three years in prison, Liebowitz was sentenced to two years in prison and Gottlieb was sentenced to one year.

“The defendants were involved in a terrifying plot to kidnap, and ultimately to kill, their intended victim,” Kim said in a statement. “Fortunately, the person they hired to carry out their crime alerted the FBI, and now the defendants have been held accountable for their crimes.”

The scheme began in July 2016, when Goldberg and Liebowitz planned the kidnapping of a man who refused to grant a religious divorce to his wife and torture him into doing so, Kim said.

Rockland man Gottlieb got them in touch with a private investigator, who they wanted to carry out the kidnapping and torture, Kim said. But the investigator, who wasn’t named, alerted the FBI to their plot.

The investigator helped the FBI gather specifcis about their scheme in August and Spetember 2016 until Liebowitz and Goldberg were arrested on Sept. 6.

Five days later, Gottlieb was arrested.

In addition to their prison sentences, Goldberg, 56, and Liebowitz, 26, were each sentenced to three years of supervised release.
