McKenzie, thirteen, was shot and killed on New Yr’s Eve.

MOUNT VERNON — A person is about to be arraigned this morning on costs that he shot and killed thirteen-yr-previous Shamoya McKenzie in Mount Vernon on New Yr’s Eve.

The suspect, who courtroom officers recognized as David Hardy, is predicted to seem in Mount Vernon Metropolis Courtroom later this morning. Metropolis officers announced a suspect’s arrest on Monday but did not release his name.

A woman who said she was Hardy’s girlfriend was among those at court for his appearance.

City officials are expected to give more details at a news conference after the arraignment.

Mount Vernon police had been investigating the fatal shooting along with state police, the FBI and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

New York State Crime Stoppers had initially offered a $2,500 reward before doubling it to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

McKenzie was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling near the 300 block of East Third Street around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet. She was pronounced dead shortly after at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital. Another man was also struck by the gunfire.

McKenzie was an eighth grader at the K-8 Graham Elementary School in Mount Vernon and was playing on the junior varsity basketball team at Mount Vernon High School. School officials described her as a stellar student, and her mother said McKenzie dreamed of playing basketball for the University of Connecticut and in the WNBA.

The UConn Huskies made McKenzie an honorary member after her death.

The investigation into McKenzie’s shooting sparked a feud among city officials over staffing in the Mount Vernon Police Department, which Mayor Richard Thomas said had fewer officers on patrol than usual at the time of the shooting.
